No Comment!

It’s hard to imagine a worse response to a media inquiry than, “No comment.” But apparently many in the legal profession haven’t gotten up to speed on this basic rule of PR. Try this instead: I’m not sure, let me look into that and get back to you. Or: I don’t have all the facts yet, but I want to provide you with the latest information as it becomes available; I’ll get back to you. These make you sound like you actually care whether you or your client look bad. Because realistically, “No comment,” in many people’s eyes equals: we’re hiding something.
